Sydney
Mortimer Laurence was born in 1865 in
Brooklyn, New York and died in 1940 in Anchorage, Alaska.
He studied under Edward
Moran and the Art Student League of New York. From 1889 to 1898,
he lived at St. Ives, an artist colony in Cornwall, England. His
exhibits include the Royal Salon of British Artists and the Paris
Salon,
1890, 1894 (honorable
mention), and 1895.
Laurence
came to Alaska in 1904 in search of gold, went broke, and
resumed painting, which kept him busy the
rest of
his life. He is Alaska’s most famous painter, with an entire
gallery dedicated to his work at the Anchorage Museum of History
and Art.

Fred
Machetanz' paintings have been exhibited around the world.
His first one-man
show took place in 1961. Machetanz was chosen Alaskan of
the Year in 1977, and was awarded three honorary doctorates and
a seat in the Alaska Press Club Hall of Fame.
The
luminous effect of his
Renaissance
glazing
techniques are the trademark of his work and his fascination
with Alaska shows through. He refers to his paintings as "Portraits
of
Alaska", an apt description for this painter of the land and its people.
